The Spade
Age: Twenty-nine
Sex: Male
D.o.B.: March 3rd, 1947

Weight: 198 lbs
Hair Color & Style: Brown, medium length, unkempt

Birthplace: Korsakov, Russia

Miracle: Impetokinesis, telekinetic manipulation of inertia.

History: Born into a piss-poor family with too many siblings for his abusive mother and alcoholic father to support, Alexander Hatch was forced into child labor in a sweat shop at the age of six. He had to watch as two of his sisters, barely even teenagers, were sold to a slave trade syndicate and carted off by flesh-peddlers to be forced into prostitution. His homeland,  a small city on the southern shore of Sakhalin Island, was in a constant state of warfare between drug cartels and the corrupt, ineffective military that killed more civilians than guerrilla soldiers. After his mother was raped and his father gunned down by soldiers Alexander and his brothers were sent to a grueling labor camp for children and the elderly where he barely endured fourteen-hour workdays, horrific living conditions, constant lashings and abuse from the guards, malnutrition, and near-starvation from the rotten scraps he was fed. His back is almost completely covered in scars from getting flayed to the bone crawling through miles of cramped conduits beneath boiling, steaming machinery in order to make repairs.

Living in such nightmarish conditions changed Alexander, it hardened him and killed all the innocence and dreams in his heart. When he was nine years old, and had suffered more in his short life than most people could even imagine, he met an elderly old man who had simply wandered into the camp in spite of the guards, watchdogs, and razor-wire fences encircling the prison-like facility. The old man passed among the children and the elderly workers, handing out medicine and food and whispering encouraging words to them. He spoke of a regime-change, an end to the constant warfare and the horrific mistreatment of the people that was coming soon. He showed them kindness and hope that most of them had not felt in years.

But the old man had no words of hope for Alexander, for when he looked into the boy's dark eyes all he could see was death. Under the cover of darkness the elder, who called himself "Hyouhakusha", or "Wanderer", led the boy out of the camp and took him miles inland to a seemingly-abandoned factory in south Sakhalin. The crumbling, rusted building had once been a textile mill but was now home to a resistance movement where revolutionaries and mercenaries, under the banner of the "Blind Spider Society", plotted to overthrow the government. Although he was far past his prime, Hyou had been a highly-skilled professional killer in his youth. He believed that Alexander possessed the detachment and ruthless soul required of an assassin.

The training was so difficult it was almost unbearable, but over the years Hyou taught Alex the arts of stealth, hand-to-hand combat, sharpshooting, and assassination techniques. After over a decade of rigorous, exhaustive training Alex had matured into a killer the likes of which the world had rarely seen. Eventually Hyou became too sickly to assist Alex any further and retired to his hometown in Japan, leaving his protégé to assume leadership of the Blind Spider Society.

Carrying out a series of ruthless assassinations on prominent government officials and the drug lords they were at war with, Hatch almost single-handedly brought an end to the corrupt regime that had reduced southern Sakhalin to a poverty-stricken warzone. He became known to the populace as "The Spade" due to the efficiency with which he would dig out and eliminate his target no matter how hard they tried to vanish into the criminal underworld.

It was during the height of his infamy that Hatch was ultimately betrayed by his closest associates. Word was spread that the Spade was returning to Sakhalin by freighter after visiting his mentor, and the moment the ship left port a series of explosives were detonated, instantly killing everyone aboard in a massive fireball that was visible for miles. However, even after Hatch's death the legend of the Spade lived on and no government official would dare to reopen the labor camps or run under-the-table deals with the drug cartels for fear that the Spade had not truely died, but merely watched from the shadows.

I figured I should explain how Hatch's power works, just so everyone's on the same page. Bear with me, it's kinda confusing but I'll try to make it as simple as possible. If you already know what inertia is, or just don't care, feel free to ignore my rambling attempt at an explanation.

Inertia is how resistant an object is to changes in momentum (that is, how difficult it is to move or stop from moving). A big, massive object has lots of inertia so it's hard to move/stop, while a light object has very little inertia so it's easy to move/stop. Normally an object's inertia will never change, regardless of gravity or how it moves (large objects in space are weightless but they're still hard to move because they still have inertia).

Now, in a nutshell what Hatch can do is make an object either harder or easier to move, giving it the semblance of being heavier or lighter. However, even if he reduces something's inertia to zero it will still be just as heavy as it normally is, just easier to move around. For instance, if he reduced the inertia of a bowling ball and you held it in your hand it would still feel heavy because gravity affects all objects the same regardless of how much inertia they have (though wind resistance will make a light object fall slower than a heavy one). But if you dropped the bowling ball on your foot it wouldn't hurt because it wouldn't have enough force to overcome the wind resistance as it fell.

On the other hand, if you held a feather and Hatch increased its inertia it would still feel light while you held it, but once you dropped it it would hit the ground (or your foot) like a sack of bricks because once gravity got it moving it would be very, very hard to stop.

If that's still too confusing I apologize, there are plenty of youtube videos that can explain inertia far better than I can.
